Welcome to the temporary home of the Znamenny Kleros Project.

What is our Vision and Mission?

The VISION behind the Znamenny Chant Documentation Project is to unlock and make known the expressive (and by corollary, the communicative) potential of Znamenny Chant as a vehicle for singing Orthodox liturgical text in the English language (and other languages), which will ultimately result in the creation of new chant compositions in English (and other languages) that embody the structural and inflectional principles observed in Slavonic Znamenny Chant prototypes.

The MISSION is to create a systematic and searchable catalog of the component elements – “chantlets” – that comprise the interrelated melodic-textual building blocks of Znamenny Chant in several forms of notation – staffless, square-note, and modern – which, in turn, will reveal the musical essence and structure of Znamenny Chant melodies and serve as a resource to future composers who may wish to compose such melodies in various other languages.
